Bicycle Part Recall Attorneys

As consumers, it is necessary that we trust that the products we purchase and use are safe. When it comes to bicycles, unsafe bikes or defective bicycle parts could cause riders or others to suffer serious injury or even wrongful death. The companies that design and manufacture bicycles and bicycle parts have a moral and legal obligation to consumers to produce safe products. When they fail in this capacity and riders suffer due to unsafe bikes or recalled bicycle parts, our product liability lawyers fight to ensure that they recover full and just compensation for their damages.

Bicycle Part Recalls

In the United States, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is the government agency in charge of ensuring that products used by Americans are safe, and it is their job to enforce recalls and alert consumers to any dangerous products. In just the last decade, the CPSC has issued bicycle part recalls affecting up to 50,000 bicycles and riders. Common bike parts that have become the subject of recalls include forks, seats, seat posts, steering mechanisms, stems, handlebars, and brakes.

When bicycle parts fail or are defective, it may cause very serious injuries or even death to riders who may been thrown from their bikes at very high speeds. In 2015, a Trek bicycle part recall was issued to address defective brakes which rendered one rider paralyzed for life.

Amongst the most recent bicycle part recalls issued by the CPSC are:

  • May 1, 2015: Felt Cruiser bicycles recalled due to possible brake failure leading to at least 26 incident reports.
  • April 21, 2015Trek bicycles recalled because release lever for front disc brakes may malfunction, causing sudden stop which may cause rider to be thrown from bicycle. Multiple injuries have been reported, one of which resulted in quadriplegia.
  • April 16, 2015: Civia Hyland bicycles recalled because fender mounting bracket may bend or break. Owners cautioned to stop using these bicycles immediately.
  • February 13, 2015: SCOTT bicycle helmets recalled because they do not meet CPSC safety standards and may pose risk of head or brain injury.
  • February 10, 2015: Marin Mountain Bikes children’s bicycles recalled due to handlebars that may loosen or separate from bike, causing loss of control and possible bike crashes.
