Fresenius Liberty Cycler Recalls

To date, the FDA has issued four recalls for the Fresenius Liberty Cycler home dialysis machine, which is relied upon by patients with diabetes to help remove toxins from their blood. The most recent recall was issued on November 5, 2013 to address a possible leak which could contaminate dialysis fluids and may cause peritonitis. Two previous recalls dealt with similar leaks, while a recall issued in March 2012 regarded a possible software issue which may also lead to the onset of peritonitis.

What is Peritonitis?

Peritonitis is a bacterial infection that preys upon the peritoneum, which is the delicate lining of the inner wall of the abdomen and abdominal organs. Even with early medical intervention, which may include the use of antibiotics or even surgery, peritonitis may spread beyond the abdomen to cause a blood infection or even sepsis, and may prove fatal. Patients who already are in compromised health, such as patients with diabetes, are at greater risk for serious complications of peritonitis.

If you or someone you love uses a Fresenius Liberty Cycler for home dialysis, it is important to be aware of potential symptoms of peritonitis, which may include:

  • Pain or tenderness in the abdomen
  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Bloating
  • Diarrhea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Decreased urine output
  • Thirst
  • Fatigue
  • Inability to pass bowel movements or gas
