FDA Recalls: Leaking Fresenius Liberty Cycler

The Fresenius Liberty Cycler home dialysis machine has been the subject of four FDA recalls to date, and three of these recalls were issued to address potential leaks in the device.

The first recall of a leaking Fresenius Liberty Cycler was issued in February 2013.  According to the FDA, the issue was “a small risk of a leak in Cycler Sets and if the Cycler Set is punctured, the dialysate may become contaminated potentially resulting in peritonitis.”

In July 2013, the FDA issued a second recall for the leaking Fresenius Liberty Cycler. This recall regarded the cassette in the device where the tubes that transfer dialysis fluids meet, and which “may leak during set up or during peritoneal dialysis treatment.”

On November 5, 2013, a third FDA recall was issued for the Fresenius Liberty Cycler. According to the FDA, this recall was necessary because “fluid leaking may be observed inside the pump compartment of the Liberty Cycler and may result in dialysate becoming contaminated, potentially causing peritonitis.”

As the FDA notes in all three recall notices, leaking in a Fresenius Liberty Cycler may cause dialysate fluids to become contaminated and may lead to the onset of peritonitis. Peritonitis is a serious infection of the lining of the abdominal organs, known as the peritoneum. Peritonitis is especially dangerous for patients already suffering from compromised health, including diabetes patients, and can prove fatal despite the use of antibiotics and possible surgery.
