Invokana Lawsuits | Compensation for Invokana Side Effects

Invokana Lawsuits

In Invokana lawsuits, plaintiffs from across the United States are coming forward to demand compensation for their damages and suffering resulting from serious Invokana side effects. Invokana (canagliflozin) is a type 2 diabetes drug in the family known as SGLT2 inhibitors. These medications are designed to help patients get rid of excess blood sugar through urination, but may also cause serious and even fatal side effects including diabetic ketoacidosis and kidney failure. It is believed that the makers of Invokana, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, did not provide sufficient warning of these side effects and thus jeopardized the lives of thousands of patients.

Dangerous Invokana Side Effects

Diabetic Ketoacidosis

The FDA issued a Drug Safety Communication on May 15, 2015 in which they warned that Invokana and other SGLT2 inhibitor drugs may increase the risk of a very serious condition called diabetic ketoacidosis. Diabetic ketoacidosis is a result a buildup of toxic acids in the blood and lead to a diabetic coma or even death if not treated properly. If you or someone you love uses Invokana or another SGLT2 inhibitor for type 2 diabetes, you must be aware of symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis, which could include:

  • Confusion
  • Weakness
  • Sleepiness
  • Fruity smell to the breath
  • Extreme thirst
  • Abdominal pain
  • Frequent urination
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Shortness of breath

Kidney Failure and other Side Effects

In addition to diabetic ketoacidosis, patients taking Invokana or another SGLT2 inhibitor are at a heightened risk for the following side effects:

  • Kidney stones
  • Kidney failure
  • Dehydration
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Yeast infections

Why file an Invokana Lawsuit?

At the time of the FDA’s warning about Invokana diabetic ketoacidosis, the agency reported that they had already 20 reports of patients who required hospital treatment for this potentially deadly side effect in just the first year this drug was on the market. Additionally, the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) reported only a few days before the FDA warning was published that Invokana is associated with more adverse event reports than 92% of the drugs this consumer advocacy group monitors.

In Invokana lawsuits, plaintiffs claim that the maker of this drug, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, was negligent in their duty to patients by failing to adequately research risks and side effects of Invokana. They also allege that Janssen failed to warn of Invokana side effects such as diabetic ketoacidosis and that an Invokana recall may have helped spare many patients’ suffering, though it may have diminished Janssen’s profits.
